The Committee will honor the memory, spirit, and accomplishments of Judge Friedman. In addition, within the Association, the Committee will pursue a prestigious annual lecture, the Judge Daniel M. Friedman Appellate Lecture, to advance the field of appellate advocacy. Judge Friedman had a long and distinguished career as a Judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (1982-2011), Chief Judge of the United States Court of Claims (1978-82), and a senior appellate attorney in the Office of the Solicitor General of the United States and an attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice. He was an esteemed federal jurist, a leading appellate advocate for the United States government, an extraordinary teacher of and mentor to his judicial law clerks and all who crossed his professional path. Judge Friedman was also a dedicated supporter of the Federal Circuit Bar Association.
The Daniel M. Friedman Lecture on Excellence in Appellate Advocacy
Within the Association, the Committee pursues a prestigious annual lecture in the field of appellate advocacy, which will be known as the Judge Daniel M. Friedman Appellate Advocacy Lecture (the “Lecture”). The Lecture will be held at a judicial, academic or other appropriate venue, together with an informal reception. The speaker at the Lecture will be a prominent jurist, practitioner, academic or other person in a related field. The Committee discusses and develops recommendations for the Lecture each year, and event details are subject to the usual approval, timing, and support practices within the Association.
